Chapter Six

Life and work were mundane as hell after such an amazing weekend. Nic tried focusing on his case, but his mind kept wandering back to Kenneth. The way Kenneth had kissed him when they parted ways kept getting stuck on repeat inside his head. He had never tasted so much promise. Nic fought the urge to call or text. He felt needy as hell.

“Here are the results on those fingerprints.”

Nic startled at the interruption. As he reached for the file, he almost asked what case they were for until it hit him. He had forgotten about taking fingerprints from the vase of the flower Kenneth sent him. With a smile, Nic sent the junior detective on his way. Since he felt dumb for the impulsive move, Nic considered throwing the results in the trash without looking. If he got busted using company resources on a personal matter, he would be out the door. He was already on his last leg. In the end, curiosity won. There were three sets of fingerprints. None of them matched Kenneth. He hadn’t personally delivered anything. That made sense. Delivering flowers wasn’t something a senator would do.

Before Nic closed the file, one name caught his eye. Jared Wrought. There were likely countless Jareds in the world. It just seemed odd. They had just stayed at a Jared’s house. Nic searched the name in the database. A picture appeared. Nic barely spared it a glance in favor of reading the details. The address was the home where they had stayed. Why had he been in DC? Had he delivered the flower? That was odd as hell. Nic checked the origin of the fingerprints. He was licensed to carry concealed. Thankfully, it wasn’t due to an arrest. Nic’s gaze moved back to his picture. He shared an odd resemblance to Kenneth. Maybe they were related. Kenneth had said Jared was his only friend. A lot of people had best friends that were also family. He could probably dig and find out, but he would definitely be fired if anyone caught him searching for anything else about Kenneth. Not to mention, that was a little too crazy, even for him.

Nic closed the search. He needed to turn off his detective brain before he ruined a good thing. Kenneth was amazing. Nic would not fuck things up by being intrusive.

“Director Stevens would like to speak to you in his office.”

Fuck. Nic managed a fake smile. “Thank you.” He couldn’t shoot the messenger. Nic powered off his computer and headed for the boss’s office. He gave a perfunctory knock before heading inside. “You wanted to see me?”

Stevens waved Nic inside. “Yes. Please have a seat.”

Nic moved to the chair across from Stevens’ desk and took a seat. “What can I do for you?”

A bland smile touched Stevens’ lips. “How have things been with you?”

Nic spent a second wondering if it was a trick question. In all his years of working there, he didn’t think the director had ever asked him that.
